In life there is much to be seen without the eyes; listen and learn.
Paula and Phoenix pulled up to the little café at the pier at around 7:30 am. It was still a bit dark out, and the fog didn't help, but they knew the place Patrick had mentioned. Patrick saw them approaching, and was pleased they were on time. It had been a long morning for him, and he wanted to just sort things out and go. This week had been one of the weirdest, most difficult weeks of his life, and he wasn't sure where to go from here. They came in, and he looked at Phoenix, and though he saw her beauty and caring, he also saw lines that hadn't been there a week ago; it had been a difficult time for everyone.
He waited while they ordered coffee, nursing his own. It was still piping hot, surprising considering he and Dan had been waiting for a little while. The marvels of Styrofoam technology, Patrick thought to himself. He'd seen a lot of good technology recently; he was surprised he was still so easily impressed.
As the ladies approached, Patrick realized he had no idea what to say. He figured he'd leave it to Dan, time was of the essence and he was truly the man in charge. Just as Patrick suspected, Dan broke the ice.
"Hey Paula, Phoenix. How've you both been then? It's quite a while since we last spoke," Dan said, somewhat softly. The air was tense, almost as between strangers.
"We've been just lovely Dan, thank you." Paula replied with a tense smile.
At that point, Dan's phone started going off. Seemingly startled, Dan sent a desperate glance at Patrick, saying, "Patrick, that might be an important call, why don't you step outside with me a second."
"Of course Dan," Patrick responded.
Stepping out into the foggy morning, Dan seemed somewhat frantic.
"Patrick, listen. That wasn't my cell phone, it's just a device meant to resemble a cell phone. It's a bug detector; it's to know if I'm being traced, followed, or eavesdropped on.
I think someone must've gotten to Paula or Phoenix. We can't confide in them, but we have to stop the cell phone bomb from going off, and that happens in less than two days. I think we're going to have to make up a reason to go, and go. I know you care for Phoenix, as I do Paula, and we might lose them if we leave without a word, but I can't trust anyone, I just can't." Dan seemed panicked.
"Dan, let's not jump to conclusions. It could have been anything that set off your phone-thing, just calm down a tick." Patrick said, a tad skeptical. The phone rang again though, and Dan stopped to explain.
"Listen Patrick, if I answer, it'll tell me the direction and distance I am from the device. I have reason to be nervous." Pulling out the slender telephone device, he opened the receiver and put it to his ear, glancing at Patrick.
"Your target is 5 meters away, due North. Walk closer for a better estimate."
Taking a couple steps closer, Dan listened again.
"Your target is 3.5 meters away, due North. Walk closer for a better estimate."
He looked at Patrick, but no words needed to be said. They were marked men.
