"So what happened then?" demanded Paula. "I want to know what was just so pleasant about your date, dear sister."
"He took me out to the mini-putt, if you'd believe it. Honestly Paula, I don't know where you find these men! He was so kind as to buy me an ice cream though, and we played a full game without me losing my temper," explained Phoenix, "and he even held my hand. It was wonderful Paula, like grade school all over again, but with none of the awfulness!"
The conflicts Phoenix was throwing at Paula were a bit overwhelming.
"It got a bit troublesome on the way there sis, Patrick is sharper than I gave him credit for... he knew it wasn't you." Phoenix threw in, nonchalantly, "in fact, I was impressed. A simple slip of the tongue and he had me. It made the drive to the mini-putt a bit awkward. He warmed up to me though, and I even gave him a kiss goodbye."
"What's this now?!" gasped Paula, in absolute shock.
"I did, and a number... why are you so mad? I only took him off your hands like you had asked."
"Fine, fine, Phoenix, you're absolutely right. That reminds me, Dan should be outside by now waiting for me. Goodnight sister."
"Have fun," laughed Phoenix. "By the way, Patrick should be outside waiting for me by now as well."
"Oh, you are absolutely insufferable! Let's head out though, I can't let you make me late."
Heading outside, Paula saw Patrick and Dan deep in conversation in front of Dan's golden jaguar. Paula was anxious at the sight of the two of them, but Phoenix was glad to see them getting along so well. Just as they began walking down the steps, a car came racing around the corner. A black Volvo came speeding up outside the flat, and Paula knew something was wrong. As the windows rolled down, she saw the pistols all too late.
"DAN! PATRICK! GET OUT OF THERE!" Paula screamed, in all desperation.
There were two loud shots in the night and Patrick and Dan collapsed. Two men got out of the car and grabbed them quickly, shoving them roughly into the back seats. Phoenix, too shocked to run, sat down on the stairs by her feet, eyes staring. Paula, yelling and chasing after them, tried hitting the window of the Volvo as it sped off. It was no use. Paula didn't know what to do. Collapsing on the street, she whimpered softly, then losing control she began to cry.
