Recently Mr. Nylander was detained by the Dutch police force on aFrench arrest warrant, as he had allegedly breached France's onlinebingo gaming laws. He fervently denied any breaches of the law byhimself, as well as by Unibet Group PLC, the company of which he isCEO. Sources say Nylander "at first thought the warrant was a joke ofsome kind... [but] The French rarely joke about these kind of things."
The issue was the inconsistency between restrictive French onlinegambling laws and the European Union treaties requiring free trade andcommerce between member states. Mr. Nylander was quick to stress thathe had complied in full with the letter and spirit of the EuropeanUnion regulations, and conducted in a fully transparent and properlyaudited operation.
Mr. Nylander saw the French monopoly provisions as against theinterests of French bingo players, and an anomaly that could be fixed.
Petter Nylander was released on a steep EUR200k bail, and he mustreappear for court when a hearing is requested. Nylander may face up tothree years if found guilty. However, in an unprecedented and unusualresponse, the European Commission has stated that 'an innocent man mayhave been arrested'.
